Description

A ~50 ka record of pteropods preservation from the Laccadive Sea, Indian Ocean. The data consists of total pteropods abundances and important species, pteropods dissolution proxies, G. menardii abundances and Menardii fragmentation index for a core SK343. The sediment core SK343 studied here is 3.55 m long and recovered near the GoM (7º46'42" N; 78º22'21" E) from the LS during Sagar Kanya cruise 343 (Fig. 1) at a depth of 1340 m well beyond the present-day ACD (~500 m) and OMZ (~1250 m). The core was subsampled at 1, 2, and 5 cm intervals, down to 100, 300, and 355 cm.

Steps to reproduce

All samples were prepared by following standard micropaleontological procedures. For the faunal analyses, approximately 2 cm3 of dried sediment was treated with 5% H2O2 to remove the OM and disperse the clay and other soil particles. The samples were then sieved through a 63 µm screen, and residues have dried in an oven at 50°C. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed on pteropod assemblages in the >125 µm size fraction, which was split into aliquots containing at least 300 specimens. The quantitative analysis involved the morphological identification and quantification of pteropod assemblages and the planktonic foraminifera species, Globorotalia menardii, under a stereo zoom binocular microscope.
