Electrical stimulation physiology data: Rodent in-vivo nerve-muscle preparation.
The data presented here is from 11 terminal rodent electrophysiology experiments. The detailed surgical and experimental methods are described in and . In brief: The common peroneal nerve (CPN) of anaesthetized Wistar rats was electrically stimulated with single pulses and the isometric twitch force of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle was recorded. Every 20 test stimulations a control pulse was delivered (phase width 200µs, biphasic rectangular, cathodic phase first, amplitude set individually – typically 1-2mA) to elicit full neuromuscular activation. The absolute twitch force recordings of test stimulations were divided by the twitch force of the closest control pulse and thus normalized. Every single electrical stimulation is represented by one row in the data published here. The variables parameterizing the shape and intensity of the electrical pulses, the stimulation electrode configuration, and the measured absolute and normalized twitch force responses are given in the columns: Column 1: Time in seconds from the beginning of the stimulation experiment. Column 2: Type of stimulation (0= rectangular control pulse, 1=rectangular test pulse, 2=Gaussian test pulse). Column 3: Subthreshold pre-pulse shape (0=no pre-pulse, 1=ramp pre-pulse, 2=square pre-pulse). Column 4: Subthreshold pre-pulse amplitude in µA. Column 5: Subthreshold pre-pulse duration in µs. Column 6: Amplitude first phase in µA. Column 7: Duration first phase in µs. Column 8: Interphase gap in µs. Column 9: Amplitude second phase in µA. Column 10: Duration second phase in µs. Column 11: Return electrode position or stimulation configuration (1=monopolar, 2=bipolar, 3=near-monopolar 1 (return electrode 5mm away from CPN), 4= near-monopolar 2 (return electrode 10mm away from CPN), 5= near-monopolar 3 (return electrode 15mm away from CPN)). Column 12: Absolute isometric EDL twitch force in N. Column 13: Normalized EDL twitch force. S. Eickhoff and J. C.
