<dc:title>Dynamic image data pertaining to the heat and mass transfer processes in small-scale free-piston homogeneous charge compression ignition engines</dc:title>
    <dc:publisher>Mendeley Data</dc:publisher>
<dc:description>Research and development activities pertaining to small-scale free-piston homogeneous charge compression ignition engines are presented. The minimization of small-scale effects is explored. Particular emphasis is placed on the heat and mass transfer processes in small-scale free-piston homogeneous charge compression ignition engines. A numerical model incorporating a force balance, heat and mass transfer, and chemical kinetics is developed to explore the combustion characteristics and flame stability in small-scale homogeneous charge compression ignition engines with free-pistons. The dynamic mesh capability is used in ANSYS FLUENT to simulate problems with free-piston boundary motion. A combination of smoothing, layering, and remeshing schemes is used to tackle the dynamic mesh problem. Boundary conditions are defined for internal flow. A compiled user-defined function is used to specify the flow-driven free-piston motion. Gravity is an important factor in the force balance, and is considered in the numerical model. A small gap remains between the free-piston and the cylinder for the sake of simplicity. The user-defined function needs to be compiled within ANSYS FLUENT before it can be used in the solver.
