<dc:title>Why telecom firms must keep expanding to sustain themselves - dataset</dc:title>
    <dc:publisher>Mendeley Data</dc:publisher>
<dc:description>This document contains the long-run financial series underpinning the analysis of the growth imperative in Canadian telecommunications. It covers the four largest Canadian telecommunications groups — BCE Inc. (Bell Canada), Telus Corporation, Quebecor Inc. and Rogers Communications Inc. — and three Compustat variables retrieved from Compustat Fundamentals Annual via Wharton Research Data Services: earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (ebitda), capital expenditures (capx), and the gross value of property, plant and equipment (ppegt). All values are in Canadian dollars, millions, on a consolidated industrial-format basis (consol = C, indfmt = INDL, datafmt = STD).

Coverage runs from 1960 to 2025 for BCE (gvkey 2137), Telus (2408) and Rogers (9215), and from 1972 to 2025 for Quebecor (8870). The analysis reported in the paper begins in 1972, the first year for which all four firms are simultaneously observed.

Each variable occupies two sheets: a raw sheet retaining the original Compustat identifiers alongside the deflator and the deflated value, and a companion sheet reshaping the deflated series into a year-by-firm matrix used to produce the paper's figures and Table 1. A seventh sheet contains two derived indicators calculated from CRTC data and from Canadian Telecommunications Association ( estimated EBITDA per gigabyte and estimated EBITDA per data subscriber per month, 2020–2024 ). The last sheet is the compiled dataset of industrial product price index from Statistics Canada (2025), used for deflation.

All monetary Compustat data are expressed in constant 2019 dollars, deflated by a producer price index with 2019 = 100.</dc:description>
