  • Abstract: Carbonate content: Bulk sediment was acidified with 10% phosphoric acid using an AutoMateFX carbonate preparation system and evolved CO2 was measured using a UIC (Coulometrics) 5011 CO2 coulometer. Analytical precision is estimated to be ±1% by repeated measurement of a carbonate standard. The record was generated by D.A. Hodell. Age model: The age model was developed by aligning the abrupt transitions of d18O record of G. bulloides in core MD01-2444 to warming and cooling events in the NGRIP d18Oice record, presented on: (i) the GICC05 timescale [Svensson, A. et al.   • Abstract: Grain parameters (size and shape) are derived by extraction and parametrisation of grain boundary networks from large area scan macroscope images from the NEEM ice core. Images have been taken in reflecting light (LASM) in the NEEM camp on the freshly drilled core, prepared as polished thick sections. A dedicated method of automatic image analysis was developed by Tobias Binder (PhD DFG-funded, 2014, AWI, Bremerhaven and IWR, Heidelberg) and applied to the images. Grain size and shape parameters, if based on reliable statistics viz. several hundreds of grains per section, help to characterise "shape preferred orientation" (SPO) as complementary information to crystal preferred orientation measurements (CPO or fabrics) with respect to the solid state deformation of polar ice.   • Abstract: The Portuguese Margin has been a prime location for investigating millennial-scale variability, where analyses of palaeoceanographic and terrestrial proxies from the same samples in marine sequences allow an in situ assessment of the relative timing of changes. Here, we investigate changes in ocean conditions and hydroclimate in the MIS 3 section of the interval 35-57 ka in core MD01-2444. Core location and study interval: Core MD01-2444 (37°33.68'N; 10°08.53'W; 2637 m water depth; 27.45 m in length) was recovered in 2001, using the CALYPSO Giant Piston corer aboard the French research vessel Marion Dufresne II.   • Abstract: Bathymetry data was acquired during R/V MARIA S. MERIAN cruise MSM5/3 in the northwestern Barents Sea between 15.06.2007 and 04.07.2007. The cruise aimed to investigate the interrelation between hydrosphere, geosphere and climate in the western Greenland coastal waters and the impact to environmental change during the Late Quaternary. For the identification of sedimentary basins the multibeam echosounder and the new parametric echosounder PARASOUND DS3 were used. In addition, multibeam bathymetric data acquisition has been deployed for the interpretation of the origin of various seabed features. Description of processed data sources: During the MSM5/3 cruise, the hull-mounted KONGSBERG EM120 multibeam echosounder (MBES) was utilized to perform bathymetric mapping in middle to deep water depths. Two linear transducer arrays in a Mills Cross configuration transmit acoustic signals of a nominal sonar frequency of 12 kHz. The emission cone has a dimension of 130° across track and 2° along track. With a reception obtained from 191 beams, the actual beam footprint is 2° by 2°. Depending on the roughness of the seafloor, the swath width on a flat bottom is maximum six times the water depth. For further information on the system, consult https://www.km.kongsberg.com/. Throughout the whole cruise generally a swath angle of about 130° was used. Responsible person during this cruise / PI: not stated. Description of data processing: Postprocessing and products were conducted by the Seafloor-Imaging & Mapping group of MARUM/FB5, responsible person Paul Wintersteller (seafloor-imaging@marum.de). The open source software MB-System (Caress, D. W., and D. N. Chayes, MB-System: Mapping the Seafloor, https://www.mbari.org/products/research-software/mb-system, 2017) was utilized for this purpose. Tide and a sound velocity profile were applied to the MSM5/3 data; there were no corrections for roll, pitch and heave. Using Mbeditviz, artefacts were cleaned manually. NetCDF (GMT) grids of the edited data as well as statistics were created with mbgrid. The published bathymetric EM120 grid of the cruise MSM5/3 has a resolution of 30 m. No total propagated uncertainty (TPU) has been calculated to gather vertical or horizontal accuracy. A higher resolution is, at least partly, achievable. The grid extended with _num represents a raster dataset with the statistical number of beams/depths taken into account to create the depth of the cell. The extended _sd -grid contains the standard deviation for each cell. The DTMs projections are given in Geographic coordinate system Lat/Lon; Geodetic Datum: WGS84. All grids produced are retrievable through the PANGAEA database (www.pangaea.de).
