Abstract: Detailed alternating field (AF) demagnetization of Natural Remanent Magnetization (NRM) were conducted on discrete samples of IODP Site U1475, complemented by Anhysteretic Remanent Magnetization acquisition measurements (ARM_acq) and subsequent demagnetization (ARM_demag). AF demagnetization data of NRM were analyzed using anchored Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to obtain the Characteristic Remanent Magnetization (ChRM). Abstract: This data set includes morphological and molecular data generated from a tsetse (Glossina sp.) collection carried out in Nigeria between 2014 and 2016. Traps were employed for one to three days in four different National Parks, one Game Reserve and two tsetse invested areas. Each tsetse was identified morphologically and dissected in the field, all tissues preserved and used for further analysis. Selected tsetse wings were mounted and photographed to be used for morphometric analysis. The whole gut of each tsetse was homogenized in the field and partially preserved for DNA analysis and used to investigate for sialidase activity with a fluorescent substrate and a natural substrate. Analysis for sialidase activity was done by fluorescent measurement and reverse phase HPLC of processed gut samples. DNA was purified from preserved homogenized gut and used for phylogenetic analysis of tsetse by amplification of Cytochrome Oxidase C SU1 and Internal Transcribed Spacer-1 (ITS1). Presence of trypanosomes was investigated in gut and crudely extracted DNA from proboscis by amplification of ITS1. Identification of the respective trypanosome species was done based on lengths polymorphism of the ITS1 region as well as sequencing of selected ITS1 amplicons and additional glycosomal Glyceraldehyde-3-phosohate dehydrogenase. Abstract: Data results from different analysis of varved sediment from the lac Ojibway (Canada). Natural Remanent Magnetization (NRM) of high sedimentation rate sediments provides significant information about the paleomagnetic secular variation of the Earth's magnetic field and can also potentially be used for stratigraphy. However, NRM acquisition depends on conditions inherent to the depositional environment. Besides recording a precise annual chronology, varved sediments are typically characterized by marked sedimentary changes within the same year. Since the Earth's magnetic field does not vary significantly over such short period, magnetic changes recorded by varves reflect the influence of sedimentary parameters on the recording process in the depositional record. The present study focuses on sediments from the former proglacial Lake Ojibway (~ 8.2 ka cal BP). It concentrates on a sequence of centimetre-thick summer and winter beds that were sampled individually. Paleomagnetic, granulometric and geochemical analyses were conducted on each individual layer. A mean inclination shallowing of 13° is observed in winter beds, while summer beds are not systematically affected by shallowing. Magnetic declinations follow, on average, the expected field direction, but differences of up to 20° occur between successive beds. Summer beds are thicker than winter beds and characterized by stronger magnetic susceptibility, higher Ca/Fe ratios and coarser sedimentary and magnetic grains. This grain size pattern reflects the input of coarser detrital particles during summer, while the finer fraction remained in suspension until deposition in winter. Abstract: The evolution of the calcareous nannofossil E. turriseiffelii - E. eximius lineage in the Turonian from the western tropical Atlantic and Indian Ocean indicates identical eiffellithid forms with morphological change in the rotation of the crossbar, relative to the longitudinal axis, from an "x" (E. turriseiffelii) to a "+" (E. eximius). Within these indistinguishable eiffellithid assemblages, neither the size nor shape show significant change during the morphological transition of the crossbar orientation. The rotation of the crossbar toward an axial alignment results in two shifts in the mean angle values. Prior to the first shift, the mean angles of the eiffellithid assemblage have values between 35o and 45o with no forms with crossbar angles of <20o. The first step occurs at the appearance of specimens with crossbar angles between 20o and 10o marking the first appearance datum (FAD) of E. eximius s. Ver. The second shift is a significant change in the mean angle values from 35-45o to 15-22o among the Eiffellithus assemblage and the appearance of morphotypes with crossbar angles of <10o recognized as E. eximius s.s. The results of this biometric study indicate that two forms can be reliably recognized and used to increase the biostratigraphic resolution, with the FAD of E. eximius s. Verbeek near the middle to upper Turonian boundary and E. eximius s.s. near the lower to middle Turonian boundary. Abstract: Porewater analyses from all M157 multicores and gravity cores are presented here. For each site, both shipboard and shore-based analyses are included. Shipboard analyses include photometric determination dissolved iron (Fe2+) and phosphate (PO43-) (Hach Lange DR 5000 photometer, 565 nm and 880 nm wavelengths), as well as ammonium (NH4+) via flow injection gas separator technique. Additional porewater aliquots were collected for analyses at MARUM between December 2019 and February 2020. Shore-based analyses completed in the Sediment Geochemistry Laboratory at MARUM include: ion chromatography (F-, Br-, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, and PO43-), photometric determination of sulfide (wavelength 670 nm), DIC and NPOC (Analytik Jena Multi N/C Series), and inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, S, Si, Sr, Ti, V). All data is over-specified for calculation purposes. Several constituents were below detection and therefore not reported here. These include: IC determined NO3-, and PO43- , ICP measurements of Cr, Cu, Mo, No, and V. Both depth in core (cm) and a corrected depth below seafloor (cm) are presented. Gravity core depths were adjusted to extend the porewater profiles from the paired multicore from the site. This offset was determined visually, based on eight constituent profiles. Most gravity cores were offset only by the length of the multicore, except for Site 14 with an additional 5cm, and Site 34 which an additional 10 cm was needed. Sites 10, 48 and 44 are only multicores, while Site 47 is only a gravity core. The data from site 48 was used to estimate an offset for the Site 47 gravity core due to their proximity. Abstract: Coral gardens are considered to be hotspots of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, due to the important structural and biogeochemical role of cold-water coral (CWC) species. Despite an increase in studies on deep reef-forming species, information on cold-water octocoral species is still very scarce. The present study focused on the feeding biology of two habitat-forming octocoral species typically encountered in seamounts in the Azores between 200 and 600m of depth: Dentomuricea aff. meteor and Viminella flagellum. We used an experimental approach aiming at determining the ability of the species to utilize different food sources including live phytoplankton (the diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans), Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) and live zooplankton (the rotifer Branchionus plicatilis). Food sources were isotopically enriched with tracers (13C, 15N) which allowed to trace the ingested food in different physiological processes, such as tissue incorporation, Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) respiration and excretion of Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) and Particulate Organic Nitrogen (PON).
