Abstract: The reasons for the early Holocene temperature discrepancy between northern hemispheric model simulations and paleoclimate reconstructions—known as the Holocene temperature conundrum—remain unclear. Using hydrogen isotopes of fluid inclusion water extracted from stalagmites from the Milandre Cave in Switzerland, we established a mid-latitude European mean annual temperature reconstruction for the past 14,000 years. Our Milandre Cave fluid inclusion temperature record (MC-FIT) resembles Greenland and Mediterranean sea surface temperature trends but differs from recent reconstructions obtained from biogenic proxies and climate models. The water isotopes are further synchronized with tropical precipitation records, stressing the Northern Hemisphere signature. Our results support the existence of a European Holocene Thermal Maximum and data model temperature discrepancies. Moreover, data-data comparison reveals a significant latitudinal temperature gradient within Europe. Last, the MC-FIT record suggests that seasonal biases in the proxies are not the primary cause of the Holocene temperature conundrum. Abstract: A novel high quality monthly mean sea level (MSL) dataset for 63 tide gauge stations at the german Baltic coastline until 2015. The dataset was generated in the AMSeL_Baltic Sea research project from 2015 to 2018. We generated a new monthly mean sea level datasets from high-resolution sea level measurements and combined these with historic datasets with applied new tidal correction if necessary and if possible with existing monthly MSL time series from the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of germany (BSH). We averaged the high resolution tide gauge data to monthly values if at least 50 % of data were available each month. Mixing historical measurements with poor or uneven temporal resolution and continuous high resolution observations from modern times can introduce biases in both interannual variability as well as long-term trends of MSL. For this reason we introduced a novel tidal correction for historic data with less than four readings per day. Abstract: Based on an integrated approach, we present the results of an original study on the late Eocene-early Oligocene interval carried out in the southwestern Neotethys margin (northeastern Tunisia). For magnetic susceptibility analysis, a total of 427 samples were collected every ~0.06 m and were measured, at the sediment dynamics and environment laboratory, the national school of engineers of Sfax (Sfax, Tunisia), for low-frequency mass specific magnetic susceptibility using a Bartington MS2 magnetometer (sensitivity of 2×10−6 m3/kg). A Handheld Olympus Delta Premium-XRF 6000 analyzer (HH-XRF), with an Rh tube and with 40 kV and 10 kV beam currents, was used to analyze a total of 41 powdered rock samples (~0.6 m step) for major and minor elemental concentrations. For stable isotopes, a total of 42 samples were analyzed covering the EOT interval. No sample was considered above 20 m, as the carbonate content falls significantly at that level in favor of clastic material. Measurements were carried out following the method of Spótl and Vennemann (2003) for mass spectrometry using a Micromass Iso Prime Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer at the Stable Isotope Laboratory in the Department of Geoscience and natural resources management at the University of Copenhagen.
