Description

The study assessed the water quality and trophic state of Laguna de San Martín (Ecuador) at six stations during summer and winter. Physicochemical and biological data, along with indices (NSF, OWQI, CCME, TSI, TRIX), revealed a chronic hypereutrophic state, characterized by high biological productivity and severe degradation during the summer months. Water quality ranged from average to very poor depending on the index used. A dynamic nutrient limitation was identified: nitrogen was the limiting factor in 55.6% of cases and phosphorus in 44.4%. This information serves as a baseline for ecological models and nutrient management strategies.
