Description

This dataset describes the processing conditions for Mg-Cu-Y beads additively manufactured using the LENS MR-7 system. This includes the mass flowrate for each elemental powder, the power and pulse duration for the initial deposition and remelting steps as well as the optical reflectivity and compositional data gathered for these beads. Mg-Cu-Y is a known glass-forming system, and optical reflectivity is correlated with the presence of amorphous material, which is generally evident with the printed beads.

Steps to reproduce

To synthesize the beads, a LENS MR-7 unit with 3 powder hoppers filled with elemental Mg, Cu, and Y metallic powder was used. The beads were produced using a single deposition step followed by a single remelting step to assist in homogenization. Compositions were measured using standardless EDS. Intensity measurements were produced by taking an image of the printed beads on a high-contrast background with diffuse lighting, normalizing the luminance to the high-contrast for comparability, and taking the average of the highest intensity pixel and its surrounding pixels.
