Description

This data set contains the information of thermophilic bacteria and fungi isolates obtained from lignocellulose-based composting throughout the critical stages of the process, which have lignocellulose-degrading activity. The collection consists of 186 strains, including 159 bacteria and 27 fungi, for whom the specific composting stage when they were obtained, their quantity and temperature inside the composting pile at sampling time was known. Bacterial strains only had xylanolytic activity while among the fungi also cellulolytic and ligninolytic activities were found for some strains. All isolates were identified by sequencing 16S rRNA or 5.8S-ITS region for bacteria and fungi, respectively. In addition, the range of growth at temperatures between 20 and 60 °C as well as the optimal temperature for growth was determined for each isolate. Each isolate is classified as thermotolerant or thermophilic according to these traits.
