This study proposes that anticipatory cues in an unfamiliar piece could facilitate listeners’ proactive allocation of cognitive resources towards two tasks: tracking the theme’s entry during the anticipatory period and, when the arrival of this theme is detected, deciding the amount of cognitive effort invested in learning this unfamiliar theme.
