Steps to reproduce

Water quality data is based on water samples collected from a settling pond system at the Coal Valley coal mine in south-western Alberta, Canada and upstream and downstream sites in the receiving river for treated effluent. Samples were analyzed using the processes described in the "method of analysis" tab of the data sheet Fish toxicity data was obtained through monthly LC50 tests run in May to October of 2024 using hatchery-reared rainbow trout (oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish were exposed to control water from upstream of treated coal mine discharge and water collected from each stage of mine water treatment usig Clearflow flocculant and neutralizer blocks. Invertebrate data is based on counts of invertebrate specimens in samples collected from the receiving river for treated coal mine effluent (upstream and downstream). Invertebrates were sorted to family level and resulting numbers were used to calculate standard diversity metrics such as SDI and EPT index according to appropriate formaulas as described in the study manuscript.
