Steps to reproduce

Heart rate (HR) was measured beat by beat and registered every 10 seconds throughout the test by electrocardiographic recording (ECG Elite Micromed, Brasilia, Brazil) and maximum heart rate was considered as the highest heart rate value obtained during the test. The volume and composition of expired gas were analyzed breath by breath using a gas analyzer (Metalyzer 3B, CPX System, Cortex, Germany), previously calibrated according to the manufacturer instructions. oxygen uptake (VO2) and excretion of carbon dioxide (VCO2) were calculated every 10 seconds from the gas analyzer. VO2max was established as the highest value achieved during the incremental exercise test. Fat oxidation (FATox) and carbohydrate oxidation (CHox) were calculated from the respiratory quotients (RQ) using standard indirect calorimetry equations (Frayn 2016). FATox (g/min) = 1.67 · VO2 (L/min) −1.67 · VCO2 (L/min) − 1.92 · n CHox (g/min) = 4.55 · VCO2 (L/min) −3.21 · VO2 (L/min) − 2.87 · n Where n represents negligible urinary nitrogen excretion. In the above calculations, CHO and FAT oxidation are based on a VO2 (STPD) of 2.500 L·min-1 and a VCO2 (STPD) of 2.250 L·min-1 and negligible protein oxidation (n = 0) (Jeukendrup and Wallis, 2005). For the analysis, FATox and CHox rates were normalized to kilogram of FFM. Maximum fat oxidation (MFO) was determined as the highest FATox value during the test. MFO/FFM was determined by normalizing MFO to FFM. In addition, variables such as: VO2, percentage of VO2max (%VO2max), HR, percentage of HRmax (%HRmax), power output (PO), and PO normalized to FFM (PO/FFM) were determined at the intensity corresponding to MFO. Energy expenditure (EE) was normalized to FFM (EE/FFM) and determined from FATox/FFM and CHox/FFM, using the predictive equation below (Jeukendrup and Wallis 2005).
