Experimental data for "The fate of barchan dunes crossing porous barriers"
Description
This dataset contains experimental videos and associated metadata from the study "The fate of barchan dunes crossing porous barriers". The experiments were performed in a controlled water channel, where subaqueous barchan dunes composed of granular particles migrated under steady flow conditions and interacted with a porous barrier consisting of an array of cylindrical pins. Unlike impermeable obstacles, the porous barrier allows sediment to be transmitted through the array while simultaneously promoting trapping, fragmentation, overpassing, and lateral bypass, leading to distinct interaction regimes. The recorded videos document the complete temporal evolution of the dune-obstacle interaction and illustrate four regimes: Overpassing, Overpassing with Disintegration, Partially Trapped, and Trapped. In addition to the videos, the dataset includes metadata describing the experimental conditions, including flow parameters, sediment properties, dune characteristics, and obstacle geometry, enabling reproducibility and further quantitative analysis of dune interactions with porous obstacle fields.
