Data on Flooded Settlements in the Dosso Region, Niger

Description

This dataset contains information about the spatial dynamics of flooded settlements in the Dosso Region, in Niger. The data was collected by means of photo-interpretation of very high-resolution satellite images available on Google Earth. Settlements were chosen according to Niger's national database on flooding, known by the French acronym, BDINA. The zip archive contains built-up areas of each of the 122 settlements at three different dates, for a total of 365 files stored in .kmz format (the odd number is due to the merge of two settlements on the most recent date). The word document contains two tables describing all settlements information regarding the built-up areas, the years of reference, and the roof composition of the building assets. The figures, which are a revisitation of the figures published in the related Land Use Policy article, show a synthesis of the data collected: -Fig. 1 shows the location of the 122 human settlements inundated between 2011 and 2019; -Fig. 2 shows the dates on which the high-resolution images of the 122 settlements are freely available on Google Earth; -Fig. 3 shows a comparison between the built-up area that can be defined with Google Earth and the built-up area of the global settlement dataset based on Landsat data (HBASE); -Figs. 4 and 5 show the built-up area on the three dates for the city of Gaya, the rural town of Tanda, the village of Bouma Manzo, and the hamlet of Kofo. The method used for the data collection is replicable in other contexts and can be used to identify the most rapidly expanding settlements, the extent of the built-up area under the risk of flooding, and to verify the accuracy of the built-up area obtained from coarse satellite images. The data presented can be used for future insights and researches on the region.
