Data of experimentally deformed saw-cut Carrara marble across the Brittle-Ductile Transition
Description
The data set contains original axial displacement and internal force data and corrected stress-strain data for all 17 saw-cut Carrara marble, which were deformed in triaxial compression at temperatures of 20 – 600°C, confining pressures of 30 – 150 MPa, and constant axial strain rate 1x10-5 s-1, and also other relevant data of the figures in the paper. Depending on the applied conditions, which are nominally in the semi-brittle deformation regime of solid Carrara marble, we observed the complete spectrum of natural faulting, stable fault sliding, unstable stick-slip, and bulk deformation with locked fault. The experiments were conducted in the Experimental Rock Deformation Laboratory of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany. The experimental conditions are listed in Tab. 1. Steps to reproduce
Cylindrical samples were prepared from Carrara marble (Bianco Lorano, Apuane Alps, Italy) and pre-cut at an angle β ≈ 40° with respect to the sample axis. The fault surfaces were ground by machine with a cup wheel or manually on a glass plate with fine-grained (9 µm) SiC powder to obtain flat surfaces with predefined roughness. Samples denoted as CMSCxx, where xx is sample number, were 20 mm long and 10 mm in diameter. All samples were dry and deformed using a Paterson type gas-medium apparatus. Raw data were axial force and axial displacement, measured with a load cell and LVDT, respectively. Raw data (axial force and displacement) were converted to stress and strain by correcting for system compliance, change of cross-sectional area and jacket strength. No code or software other than Origin was used in our correction.
