Appropriate media for promoting health literacy about iodine to women of childbearing age in Borabue hospital: Survey data

This cross sectional survey research aims to survey an appropriate type of health literacy media for promoting the good health literacy level in child-bearing age women, to determine perception about iodine benefit and meaning of healthy child and to test relationship between educational level and iodine knowledge include the meaning of healthy child of child-bearing age women. The result found 58 women 15-45 years old with mean age 31 years (SD = 7.4). Most educational level was Bachelor’s degree or higher (58.6%), most occupation was employee (43.1%). Type of medias they most required were combine medias (50%) and the media from internet (41.4%). Perception about iodine benefit i.e., prevent goiter and promote mental development (43.1%), some participants perceived only prevention of goiter (37.9%) and only small portion perceived iodine could promote normal mental, normal growth and good IQ (6.9%, 6.9% and 5.2%, respectively). Perception about meaning of healthy child i.e., the child had complete body (44.8%), normal birth weight (20.7%), normal mental development (10.3%) and completed recognized only 13.8%. Educational level not correlated with iodine knowledge and the meaning of healthy child (p = 0.646, 0.606, respectively).

Steps to reproduce

A cross-sectional descriptive survey study was conducted during May 9, 2022 and June 30, 2022 at the outpatient department of Borabue hospital, Borabue district, Mahasarakham province, Thailand after all participants who met inclusion criteria signed an informed consent. All of the women who visited in Borabue hospital and met the inclusion criteria were included in this survey study. The inclusion criteria included all women 15-45 years of age who visited at the outpatient department during 9, May 2022 and 30, June 2022. Participants were excluded if they couldn’ t read or write the Thai language or rejected to participate in the study. Sample size was calculated by the WinPepi program version 11.65 with the module estimate proportion. , the sample size was 58 participants then self-administered questionnaires which spent the time about 10 -15 minutes were distributed to each participant. SPSS version 26 copyright of Khon Kaen University was used for data analysis. The demographic characteristics were demonstrated with percentage, frequency, mean, standard deviation minimum, maximum. The categorical data such as age, sex were analyzed by descriptive statistic i.e., frequency, percent, mean, standard deviation. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used for test normality of quantitative variables and the ordinal Chi-square was used for test the relationship between qualitative variables which ordinal and nominal scale and demonstrated with the p-value ≤ 0.05.
