Sample collection: In the intertidal zone, 1m from the water line, at low tide • At least 1m from the mangrove roots in order to avoid damaging the plants. • At least 1m from one another. • Samples from a depth of 20cm are obtainable. Hand-corer technique, samples taken at 10cm depth and 20cm depth, 6 months after oil spill event. gear: commercially available 10cm steel bulb transplanter, steel hand trowels marked at 1cm intervals. Collection bottle: clear sealable 1 litre glass jar. Testing in laboratory on same day of collection, or kept at 4 degrees celsius in a dark room before testing as soon as possible after collection. analysis by the mass spectrometer Agilent 7890A Gas Chromatograph with 7693 autosampler (Agilent, Santa Clara, CA, USA), set up to analyse the following hydrocarbons: Benzo[a]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene, pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[f,h,i]perylene, fluoranthene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[j]fluoranthene, benzo[e]pyrene, cyclopenta[c,d]pyrene, anthracene, acenapthene, acenaphthylene, fluorene, 2-methylnaphthalene, naphthalene and phenanthrene.
