Description

This data set is from the Pakistan site of the multicenter study "Young Infants Clinical Signs Study Group. Clinical signs that predict severe illness in children under age 2 months: a multicentre study. Lancet. 2008 Jan 12;371(9607):135-42. DOI: 10.1016/S0140-6736(08)60106-3. PMID: 18191685. Data was collected for developing a simplified algorithm that can be used by first-level health care workers to identify young infants in need of hospital referral and care. The main study was carried out in 7 sites across 6 low- and middle-income countries (Dhaka, Bangladesh; La Paz, Bolivia; Kumasi, Ghana; Chandigarh, India; Delhi, India; Durban, South Africa and Karachi, Pakistan). Data was collected on socio-demographics, symptoms and clinical signs by trained Lady Health Workers. We examined the sensitivity, specificity, and odds ratio (OR) for each symptom and sign individually and combined them into algorithms to assess their value for predicting severe illness, excluding jaundice
