Toothbrushing and Fine Motor Skills
Description
This dataset includes illustrations and a database derived from our article "Association of children's toothbrushing and fine motor skills: a cross-sectional study". Based on anecdotal evidence and data from other fields suggesting that hand grip patterns of children using the toothbrush may be associated with oral hygiene, we conducted an observational study, and explored this hypothesis using cross-sectional data.

A figure of immature and inefficient prehension patterns that children may use in their regular toothbrushing is provided in order to demonstrate how such patterns look like, allowing clinicians to detect them and to flag possible neurodevelopmental problems. Moreover, photographs before and after children’s regular toothbrushing are provided. A supplementary database that contains data of children’s dental plaque scores (Quigley-Hein Index) before and after toothbrushing instructions (modified Bass and Fones Techniques) is provided, too.
