Description

Data output from the QICPIC dynamic image analyser. It contains general grain-size and shape distributions of Rotes Kliff (labelled "C" ) and nourished beach (labelled "N") sediments and their mixtures. Artificial mixtures were prepared with 10% content interval using a rotational splitter.

Steps to reproduce

Sediment was dried at 110 ºC for 12 h, and then 225 g was extracted using a manual trough-splitter. Then, samples were divided into 55 portions weighing 5 g each, using a rotational splitter. In total, 110 portions were classified into 11 classes representing the gradual change from the cliff (C) through mixed to nourished (N) sediment by mixing the respective masses of the two fractions. Each of the 11 individual samples was measured using a Sympatec QICPIC dynamic image analyser device to obtain grain-size, roundness, convexity, sphericity, and aspect ratio distributions. The measurement conditions were set in dry mode with vacuum extraction. The feeding rate was set individually depending on the sample composition to avoid the double recording of individual particles. The classification of grains to size classes was set in the device software and covered the ~0.0625 to ~4 mm range with ~0.25 phi intervals. All applied shape descriptors have a range from 0 to 1 and are divided into 100 classes.
