Description

Supplementary File 1: Demographics and characteristics associated with online patient portal (Epic MyChart) activity at an academic medical center. Data includes de-identified patient #, legal sex (as recorded in the electronic medical record, EMR), preferred language (as documented in EMR), patient self-identified race (as in EMR), age in years at time of first diagnostic test within the retrospective time period, and whether MyChart account was active during retrospective timeframe of study. There are a total of 204,605 unique patients (88,978 male, 115,627 female) with mean age at first diagnostic test of 44.3 years (standard deviation of 23.6 years). The retrospective timeframe covered February 9, 2020 to December 9, 2021. Patient ages > 89.0 years old are entered as "> 89".

Steps to reproduce

Data for the study was retrieved using Epic Reporting Workbench, allowing for retrieval of past diagnostic test results. Data was retrieved for all orders of 267 laboratory tests (including blood gas analysis, chemistry, coagulation, cytogenetics, hematology, microbiology, and urinalysis) for which a specimen was collected during the retrospective analysis period. Some of the laboratory tests were panels (e.g., the 8-test Basic Metabolic Panel) or generic orders that covered anatomic pathology procedures across various subspecialty areas (e.g., Cytopathology Examination, Surgical Pathology Examination) or microbiology cultures (e.g., Blood Culture, Fungal Blood Culture). The laboratory tests retrieved also included the top 25 most frequently ordered tests sent to outside reference laboratories as well as generic orders ('miscellaneous tests’) that covered send-out tests not built in the system (e.g., Miscellaneous Test-Blood, Miscellaneous Test-Genetic). Data was also retrieved for 82 different radiology imaging studies including 28 X-ray, 23 computed tomography (CT), 26 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and 6 nuclear imaging studies that were performed during the retrospective analysis time. Data retrieved included legal sex, preferred language, self-identified race, age, and whether patient had active MyChart account during retrospective timeframe. For the retrospective timeframe (February 9, 2020 to December 9, 2021), the dataset comprised 204,605 unique patients. References: Krasowski MD, Grieme CV, Cassady B, et al.
