Description

1. This data set shows the number of applications filed with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to obtain breeder's rights for plant varieties developed by 47 sub-national governments in Japan between 1978 and 2020. 2. It also shows the relationship between the number of applications and the number of plants. 3. Finally, the number of applications for the 20 years period from 2000 to 2019 is shown by sub-national governments. The figure uses five-year averages, but the data set shows the number of applications for each year. To create this data set, I used the CSV output of all data items (http://www.hinshu2.maff.go.jp/vips/cmm/apCMM110.aspx?MOSS=1) published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. However, the data published by MAFF is only provided in Japanese. In the totaling of the data, the variety developed by the legal persons managed by the budget of the sub-national government such as local independent administrative agency and public interest foundation was also counted as the variety developed by the sub-national government, even if it was not explicitly made to be sub-national government.
