Description

Companion data package for: "Seasonality of tourism demand in hotel and short-term rental accommodations in Spain: a dynamic and multiscale decomposition" (Spain and its 17 NUTS-2 regions, 2019 and 2025). Monthly hotel overnights are from the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE); short-term rental (STR) overnights are from Eurostat's experimental statistics on short-stay accommodation offered via online platforms. Seasonal concentration is measured with the covariance-based Gini index and decomposed by accommodation type into demand share, within-type concentration and Gini correlation with the aggregate distribution; changes between 2019 and 2025 are attributed to these three components, with significance assessed via scaled monthly randomisation. The file includes the processed results underlying every table and figure in the manuscript, the coefficient-of-variation robustness check, and the raw monthly series. Full variable definitions and a sheet-by-sheet index are provided in the README tab of the file itself.

Raw monthly hotel overnight stays for 2019 and 2025 were obtained from Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE), Hotel Occupancy Survey, available at https://www.ine.es/dyngs/INEbase/operacion.htm?c=Estadistica_C&cid=1254736177015&menu=metodologia&idp=1254735576863 (accessed 14 April 2026). Raw monthly short-term rental (STR) guest overnight stays were obtained from Eurostat, Short-stay accommodation offered via collaborative economy platforms by months and residence of the guest – experimental statistics (dataset TOUR_CE_OMR), available at https://doi.org/10.2908/TOUR_CE_OMR (accessed 17 April 2026). The methodological documentation for the Eurostat platform data is available at https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/documents/7894008/12961561/CETOUR-Methodological-note.pdf. The two sources were harmonised to common spatial (Spain and its 17 NUTS-2 regions) and temporal (monthly) scales. Hotel data represent hotels and similar accommodation, whereas Eurostat’s platform series represent holiday and other short-stay accommodation, thereby excluding hotels. The analysis compares the two endpoint years, 2019 and 2025. Seasonal concentration was measured using the covariance-based Gini index. Aggregate concentration was decomposed by accommodation type into demand share, within-type concentration, and Gini correlation with the aggregate monthly distribution. Changes between 2019 and 2025 were attributed to changes in these three components using the contribution-to-change decomposition. Statistical significance was assessed using scaled monthly randomisation. The workbook contains the source monthly series, processed results underlying the manuscript’s tables and figures, the coefficient-of-variation robustness check, and a README sheet with variable definitions and a sheet-by-sheet guide.
