Description

The SMIT Engineering Career Aspirations Dataset is a comprehensive, structured dataset containing information from 1,863 undergraduate engineering students at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), India. It integrates multiple dimensions of student data, including demographic attributes, BFI-10 personality trait responses, and RIASEC-based career interest selections. This dataset provides a unique hybrid view of how engineering students’ psychological profiles—measured through the Big Five personality traits (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness)—relate to their declared career aspirations across domains such as technical engineering, research, design, cybersecurity, and management. It also includes regional, gender, and semester-level distribution, offering rich opportunities for descriptive analysis, cross-cultural comparisons, statistical modelling, clustering, and machine-learning–based prediction of career preferences.

Steps to reproduce

• Create Survey: Prepare an online Microsoft Form including demographics, BFI-10 items and career interest questions. • Collect Data: Distribute the form to SMIT engineering students across all semesters and record responses. • Export Data: Download raw responses in CSV format from Microsoft Forms. • Clean Data: Use Python/R to remove incomplete entries, standardize labels, and reverse-score BFI-10 items. • Structure Dataset: Organize final columns (demographics, BFI-10 Q1–Q10, career interest category). • Reproduce Analyses: Run descriptive statistics • Save & Share: Store cleaned dataset then upload to Mendeley with documentation.
