Description

Objective: to evaluate nicotine patch effectiveness in the control of pain, edema and trismus in lower third molar surgery. Materials and Methods: A prospective, randomized, triple blind split-mouth trial was performed wiih 20 patients who underwent two surgical procedures at different times. In the control intervention, a nicotine patch without the active principle was used (placebo), whereas a patch containing 14 mg nicotine was used in the experimental group. Results: It was observed that the nicotine patch was effective in pain control at 4 and 8 hour intervals with values of p = 0.023 and p = 0.005, respectively. The adhesive patch containing the active principle also showed significant statistical results for edema control in the first 24 hours (p = 0.004), 48 hours (p = 0.005), 72 hours (p = 0.007) and 7 days (p = 0.046) following the intervention. Postoperative mouth opening was significantly higher at 72-hour and 7-day intervals in patients who received the nicotine patch. The amount of rescue analgesics was lower when the patch was used (p = 0.026) and the level of satisfaction was statistically relevant for interventions which included the active principle (p = 0.008). Conclusion: The nicotine patch was effective in controlling pain, edema and trismus.
