Description

Groundwater quality is a major issue of today’s era. Groundwater quality improvement through use of macrophytes can be economical and efficient. Hence, it will be beneficial where there is scarcity of freshwater and lack of adequate provisions for setting up water treatment plant. In this study, the groundwater samples from different depths of handpumps, located at various locations of Gujaini area of Kanpur city were collected and analyzed for different water quality parameters such as pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity, hardness and turbidity. TDS and hardness were observed beyond the limits as mentioned in drinking water standards. For the treatment of TDS and hardness, the macrophytes (water hyacinth and vetiver grass) were grown under observation. While observations, the growth parameters of species (water hyacinth and vetiver grass) like number of leaves, plant weight, length of principal root and number of roots with the passage of days were measured. The removal efficiency of water hyacinth and vetiver grass were also computed for different water quality parameters. The study showed that water hyacinth had higher contaminant reduction capability than vetiver grass. The data generated for various water quality parameters and measured values of growth parameters of species can help the researchers, carrying out research at different locations of Kanpur city.
