Carbon, Mercury, and Related Geochemical Data from Sediment Cores in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean
Description
This dataset compiles carbon, mercury, and associated geochemical data from five sediment cores collected in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean, including cores P1-31, D2, E10, D5, and D7. The Excel file contains five worksheets, with each worksheet corresponding to an individual sediment core. A total of 161 depth-resolved sediment samples are included. The maximum investigated core depth is 43 cm, and most samples were collected at 1-cm depth intervals. The dataset includes total mercury concentrations (THg), total organic carbon contents (TOC), sea-surface temperature estimates (SST), stable carbon isotope compositions (δ¹³C), radiocarbon isotope compositions (Δ¹⁴C), mercury stable isotope compositions (δ²⁰²Hg, Δ¹⁹⁹Hg, Δ²⁰⁰Hg, and Δ²⁰¹Hg), elemental concentrations of Si, Al, Ca, Fe, and Mn, and NDI values. The dataset can be used to investigate the vertical distributions of carbon and mercury in Northwestern Pacific sediments, evaluate the relationship between organic carbon accumulation and mercury burial, and identify potential mercury sources and biogeochemical processes using mercury isotopes and elemental geochemical proxies. It also provides baseline data for assessing the influences of atmospheric inputs, the marine biological pump, and localized hydrothermal activity on mercury cycling and preservation in deep-sea sediments. Blank cells indicate parameters that were not measured or for which valid data were unavailable.
