5 mL of 1 mass% sodium alginate solution (15–20 cP as purchased from Sigma Aldrich, Oslo, Norway) containing 0.1 M (NH4)2HPO4 (Sigma Aldrich) into 50 mL of 0.25 M Ca(NO3)2 (Sigma Aldrich) solution, both adjusted to pH 7 or 8, at a rate of 5 mL/h. Raman analysis were performed on beads made at pH 7 after 24 h storage in the gelling solution. The beads were washed with DIW prior to analysis to wash away any residual ions (especially nitrate yields a strong Raman signal). A 532 nm laser was used at 100 % power with 100 accumulations of 1 s exposure.
