Plant macrofossil and testate-amoebae analysis for Linje peatland
Description
The dataset contains results from plant macrofossil and testate amoeba analyses of a peat core retrieved from Linje peatland in 2019. The results are described in detail in Poolma et al.: The most complete Holocene peat record from Central Europe: multi-proxy reconstruction of postglacial wetness changes and climate events from Linje peatland, Poland, Clim. Past, 2025. Plant macrofossils: Data (analyst: Eliise Poolma) were obtained using the Quadrat and Leaf Count protocols (Barber et al., 1994; Mauquoy et al., 2010). The Quadrat Method was used to estimate peat components as percentages, while the Sphagnum Leaf Count involved identifying 100 stem/branch leaves per sample to the highest possible taxonomic level. When the total Sphagnum abundance was ≤5% of a sample, species-level identification was not attempted. Subsamples (2–27 cm³) were analysed at 5–10 cm intervals between 2.5 and 1187.5 cm depth. Countable macrofossils (e.g., seeds, fruits, needles, bud scales) are standardised to a 5 cm³ volume. Testate amoebae: (analysts: Katarzyna Marcisz and Patryk Fiutek) Subsamples of ~5 cm³ were analysed at 5 cm resolution from 0–1187.5 cm depth. Samples were prepared following Booth et al. (2010). The results were used for quantitative depth-to-water table (DWT) reconstruction, performed in RStudio using the Pan-European training set (Amesbury et al., 2016). DWT reconstruction is also in the dataset. NMDS dataset: This dataset includes bryophyte and testate amoeba data used in the ordination analysis. Bryophyte percentages were recalculated from the general plant macrofossil dataset, considering only the relative proportions of bryophyte taxa. Here, the stratigraphical zones (defined from bryophytes) are also included. References: Amesbury, M. J., Swindles, G. T., Bobrov, A., Charman, D.
