Description

This data set describes the research findings that target to establish the hydrochemical facies/water types of the studied surface and groundwater sources; evaluate the suitability of the water sources for irrigation using various techniques such as MAR, SAR, Mg:Ca, Na:Ca ratio, Kelley's ratio and Wilcox diagram; demonstrate the relationship/variation in hydrogeochemistry of the water sources and pinpoint the likely origins of the water variables using different multivariate statistical approaches; ascertain the sanitary condition of selected water sources and employ WQI and TDS-pE graph to determine fitness for drinking purpose. This data set was generated from 124 sampling sites in Abia and Imo States, Southeastern Nigeria. The data presented in the Excel spreadsheet has "Tabs" comprising correlation, weights of variables, WQI and water quality variables. Durov and Piper diagram to explain the hydrochemical facies can be accessed using Grapher version 10 and above, while Factor/Principal component analysis of water sources can be accessed using SPSS version 20 and above. Notable findings are: • Dominant hydrochemical facies in the surface and groundwater sources are Mixed Ca-Na-HCO3 and Na-Cl-SO4 types respectively. • 98% and 84% of the ground and surface waters respectively had low pH in the range of 3.1 to 6.4 • TDS-pE graph is a promising, simple and generic tool for interim monitoring of water quality • All surface water sources are suitable for irrigation by MAR, SAR, Mg:Ca and Wilcox method
