This section outlines managerial perspectives and recommendations from the research's defined aims and objectives. A novel Virtual SCND approach is presented, demonstrating a synergy of transparency, flexibility, and sustainability. A key innovation lies in the pioneering integration of advanced platforms, specifically BCT and IoT, into SCND. A policy framework emphasizing transparency, tracking, and secure transaction payments within a virtual environment is proposed, leveraging IoT and BCT while addressing crucial sustainability metrics such as CO2 emissions and energy consumption. Furthermore, a flexible strategy is recommended, prioritizing the consistent fulfillment of demand, with enhanced adaptability achieved through dynamic adjustments to facility capacity based on evolving conditions. This approach offers significant advantages, particularly in navigating complex scenarios like the COVID-19 pandemic and other unforeseen natural disasters, enabling organizations to capitalize on disruptions for performance enhancement. Organizations adopting IoT can harness internal and external resources effectively for comprehensive product and service tracking. Moreover, the practical application of BCT can significantly bolster supply chain management agility. BCT facilitates streamlined transaction and settlement processes across all supply chain stages, improving payment operations and reducing variable costs. Payment processes can be efficiently executed via smart contracts among all supply chain stakeholders upon demand fulfillment. Manufacturers of essential goods and customized products, alongside crisis management executives, play a pivotal role in this study. Ultimately, the strategic design of the supply chain utilizing modern technologies promises to improve organizational performance, reduce associated costs, and drive profitability within the relevant industries.

Steps to reproduce

This research investigates the implementation of a sustainable, flexible, and transparent supply chain network (TFSSCND) in a pharmaceutical company in Iran. This company aims to improve its supply chain network (SCN) performance, ensure the authenticity of goods through the Internet of Things (IoT), facilitate timely demand transmission through authorized channels, and secure payments using a blockchain system (BCT). This initiative is of significant importance given the critical role of health in various societies, the substantial sales volume, and the high added value of the pharmaceutical industry. Case study data were collected from the perspectives of experts and specialists in the pharmaceutical field, and valuable insights were also obtained through interactions with pharmaceutical industry managers to gather the necessary data. This pharmaceutical company intends to launch TFSSCND by leveraging BCT and IoT to facilitate communication and build trust among manufacturers, distributors, warehouses, and retailers, aiming for transparency and cost reduction. Furthermore, it seeks to manage disruptions throughout the network and consider environmental indicators in the model design.
