Data for the Use of Radiocarbon Labelling for Screening Iron Deficiency Tolerance of Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) Genotypes

Soybean acquire iron by “Strategy I mechanism”, a reliable measurement of the carbon exudation by root is critical to progress our understanding of iron uptake by the plant. C-14 content in the root exudates provide reliable estimates and can be exploited to screen promising genotypes with better ability to survive under iron limiting conditions. The data is used to characterise the scientific basis for the use of C-14 as a tracer for providing reliable estimate for better screening of iron efficient and responsive soybean. We report here the basis for screening iron efficient genotype of soybean based on 14C labelling for the rapid measurement of the total release of organic compounds by roots. Under iron limiting stress (-Fe) condition, the genotypes differ in their response; FeER (NRC-45) exhibited more pronounced tolerance than FeINR (G-2132) and the relative performance follows the trend FeER (NRC-45) > FeENR (J-231) > FeIR (IC-18734) > FeINR (G-2132).
