Description

A soundscape-based citizen science (CS) program was developed and tested within Queulat National Park (QNP), a protected area (PA) experiencing overtourism in recent years, along Chilean Patagonia’s Route of National Parks. Research employed visitor intercepts to recruit 650 CS volunteers for a brief listening exercise and survey at three QNP sites, during the peak tourism season —February 2022.

Steps to reproduce

A simple citizen science exercise was designed to contribute to protected area overtourism monitoring., involving a simple 1-minute listening exercise, followed by a brief survey about participants’ soundscape perceptions and experiences. Data was collected at three sample sites within highly-trafficked visitor areas of the Queulat National Park, for five consecutive days during the peak tourism season of 2022. The dataset is arranged to facilitate sound-level and soundscape level analysis. For further information, please contact Dr. Trace Gale (tracegale@ciep.cl).
