3.9 Data Collect Tools and Methods The study used predominantly observation guide and questionnaire for all respondents and interview guide for teachers and support staffs, as per the study variables. Focus Group Discussion guide was used for all categories of respondents. 3.1.1 Observation Guide The researcher made observation as per the guide designed. The observed parameters were; availability of hand washing station, number of hand washing stations, location of hand washing station, availability of soap at hand washing station. Others were; availability of water at hand washing station, Volume of water, type of water and cleanliness of the toilet/latrine. 3.9.2 Questionnaires Researcher administered questionnaire were used to interview respondents soon after using toilet/latrine. Respondents were asked to state whether any of the stated independent variables affected their proper latrine use or hand washing behaviours. The researcher took note of all the responses as they were given 3.9.3 Interview Guide Qualitative data was collected from senior school heads by use of an interview guide which was structured in a way that allows flexibility. The researcher ensured that the same general areas of information are collected from each interviewee in a conversational approach that allows a degree of freedom and adaptability in getting information from the interviewee. The researcher was able to ask probing questions based on the responses to pre-constructed questions. This enabled in-depth exploration of the views of the respondents. 3.9.4 Focus Group Discussion Focus discussions with three focus groups were held comprising teachers, support staffs and pupils respectively. The first group comprised of teachers (12 in number), the second group consisted of support staffs (12 in number) and the third group comprised pupils (15 in number). Each focus group was guided by the researcher to extract first-hand information about sanitation and hygiene practices in schools.
