Description

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial BACKGROUND: In systematic reviews and meta-analysis studies on patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) has been stated that new studies should determine the most effective treatment methods. Comparison of Russian Currents (RC) and Aussie Currents (AC) with isokinetic method is important in terms of determining the most effective treatment method. OBJECTIVES: A randomized controlled clinical study was conducted to compare the efficacy of isokinetic exercise (IE) together with RC and AC in individuals with PFPS. METHODS: 59 patients with PFPS were randomized into four groups. One group received only IE for three weeks, while the others received RC, AC, or placebo electrical stimulation (pES) in addition to IE. Before starting the applications, the severity of symptoms and pain, functional status, activity limitations and quality of life of the patients were evaluated using Patellofemoral Syndrome Pain Severity Scale (PSSS), Stair Climbing Test (SCT), Anterior Knee Pain Scale (AKPS), Tegner Activity Level (TAS), Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale (LKSS), Knee Outcome Survey Activities of Daily Living Scale (KOS-ADL), Short Form (SF-36). These assessments were repeated after the treatments and at the end of the three-week control period. RESULTS: In the study, pain intensity (p<0.05), performance-based and patient-reported functional status, quality of life increased significantly PoT compared to PrT (p<0.05) in all four groups after treatment. The groups were found to be similar among themselves (p>0.05). As a result of the study, it was determined that pain severity decreased (p<0.05) post-treatment (PoT) compared to pretreatment (PrT in all four groups, and performance-based and patient-reported functional status and quality of life increased significantly (p<0.05) PoT compared to Prt. The effect was preserved in the control period (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of the study showed that isokinetic exercises were effective in patients with PFAS, while medium frequency alternating currents (AC and RC) applied together with isokinetic exercises did not make a significant difference. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapy, Level 1b. 11.02.2020 was registered on the website of Clinical Trials.gov (NCT number; NCT04945759). KEY WORDS: Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Anterior Knee Pain Syndrome, Electrical Stimulation Therapy, Electrotherapy, Aussie Currents
