Description

Instruments, prompts, and qualitative data used in the project Appendices A to E detail the instruments and materials used in this project. Appendix A is the Questionnaire on Intercultural Activities in ELT materials. Appendix B is the Open-ended Questionnaire on Cultural Conceptualisations. Appendix C is the Focus Groups Questioning Route. Appendix D is the Original Headway Textbook Sample, used in accordance with fair dealing laws. The Author-developed Transcultural Materials (Appendix E) were developed through various suggestions in the scholarly literature on transcultural activities (e.g., Kiczkowiak, 2020; Kiczkowiak & Lowe, 2019; Matsuda, 2012; Rose & Galloway, 2019). The design of the sample was curated by an external collaborator. The photo was taken with the consent of the depicted individuals. Also included are the materials which were used as prompts for the open-ended questionnaire (Q14 and Q15 Video Prompt) and for the focus groups (The Transcultural Introduction Video and the PowerPoint prompts). The Q14 Video Prompt and Q15 Video Prompt used in the Open-Ended Questionnaire were scripted by the authors and shot using pictures in the public domain and voice acting provided by research collaborators. These videos contained stereotypical and essentialist cultural statements on which participants were required to comment. The Focus Group Prompts PowerPoint was used to stimulate the discussion during the focus groups. The Transcultural Introduction Video was developed by the authors and voice acted by an external collaborator. The video was meant to expose the participants to Will Baker’s ICA model and to generate discussion around the ideas of transculturality and transcultural pedagogies. Finally, the attachments include the project summary that was shared with the participants for the purpose of member validation and the Quirkos report containing the authors’ coding for the participants’ qualitative data on which the analysis was later developed.
