Survey results: Support for AI tools at university libraries in the Greater Bay Area
Description
This survey was conducted between 10 October and 14 November 2023. The target population was librarians working at universities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) of the People's Republic of China (Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau). Its major purpose was to investigate the current attitudes of academic librarians in the GBA toward the adoption of AI tools (including generative AI tools like ChatGPT) at their institutions, as well as the support that academic librarians were currently or planning to provide for such adoption. Convenience sampling was used to obtain 107 responses from the target population. The results showed that most respondents had a positive view of AI tools. Those that reported being more familiar with AI tools were more likely to have a positive view of them. Although support by libraries for AI tools was rated as moderately important or above by 85% of respondents, a significant number reported that their library either had no current or future plans to provide such support, or that they were unsure whether such plans existed. They also expressed needs for training and experience sharing. Based on these findings, it is suggested that library leaders develop and communicate clear strategies for providing support for AI tools. Training in specific areas where library support is gaining momentum is also needed. A slide deck providing a more detailed summary of results has been included.
