Military-affiliated Ministers in Republican Governments (1923-2025)
Description
This submission includes two distinct but related datasets that provide a detailed quantitative analysis of the presence of military-affiliated individuals in Turkish cabinets. The data covers the period from 1920 to 2025 and serves to illustrate the extent of the military's influence within the executive branch of the Turkish government. Dataset 1: "Table 4. Military-affiliated Ministers in Turkish Cabinets (1920-2025)" This dataset provides a comprehensive list of all ministers who had a military background, organized by the cabinet they served in. The dataset includes the following variables: Government Number: The sequential number of the cabinet. Cabinet Name: The name of the cabinet (e.g., The 1st Government of the Executive Committee, The 2nd Government of İsmet İnönü). Years in Office: The time period during which the cabinet was in power. Name of the Minister: The full name of the minister with a military background. Ministry: The specific ministry or portfolio held by the individual (e.g., Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Highest Military Rank: The highest rank the individual attained in the Turkish Armed Forces. Years of Military Service: The duration of the individual's service in the military. Dataset 2: "Table 5. Military-affiliated Ministers by Cabinet (1920-2025)" This dataset provides a statistical summary of the number of military-affiliated ministers for each cabinet. It offers a macro-level view of the trends over time and includes the following variables: Government Number: The sequential number of the cabinet. Total Number of Ministers: The total number of ministers in the cabinet. Number of Military-affiliated Ministers: The count of ministers in the cabinet with a military background. Percentage of Military-affiliated Ministers: The calculated percentage of military-affiliated ministers relative to the total number of ministers in the cabinet. Both datasets were compiled through a meticulous review of official cabinet lists, biographical records, and government archives. They are suitable for longitudinal statistical analysis, allowing researchers to track the historical evolution of military presence in the executive branch and to correlate these trends with major political events and shifts in civil-military relations in Turkey.

Steps to reproduce
The data in these tables was collected and processed using a systematic archival research and descriptive quantitative analysis approach. To reproduce the findings, a researcher should follow these steps: 1. Data Collection: Access Archival Sources: Access official government cabinet lists and biographical information of ministers from 1920 to 2025. These records can be found in official government archives, the archives of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, and parliamentary records. Systematically Identify Military-affiliated Ministers: For each cabinet, review the list of ministers. Identify individuals with a professional background in the Turkish Armed Forces by cross-referencing their biographies with military records. Collect Detailed Information: For each identified minister, record the following information: their name, the government number, the cabinet's name, the years in office, the specific ministry they held, their highest military rank, and their years of military service. 2. Data Processing and Analysis: Create a Detailed List (Table 4): Enter the detailed information for each military-affiliated minister into a spreadsheet or database to create a comprehensive list. This constitutes "Table 4." Create a Summary Table (Table 5): For each government number, count the "Total Number of Ministers" and the "Number of Military-affiliated Ministers." Enter these counts into a separate table. Calculate Percentages: For each cabinet, calculate the percentage of military-affiliated ministers by dividing the "Number of Military-affiliated Ministers" by the "Total Number of Ministers" and multiplying by 100. Verification: Verify the data by cross-referencing with reliable secondary sources, such as academic studies on Turkish political history or official government websites, to ensure accuracy in minister counts and cabinet timelines. This methodology ensures a transparent and reproducible process for analyzing the historical presence of military-affiliated individuals within the Turkish cabinet, providing a clear quantitative basis for further research on the topic.
