Oxidation of Tyranno(r) Grade S SiC fibers under ambient air

Description

These data concern the oxidation rate measured on Tyranno Grade S fibers, from 450 °C to 1140 °C under ambient air. Linear oxidation are observed for temperatures below 650 °C over a wide range of thicknesses, whereas the conventional paralinear oxidation is observed above that temperature.

Steps to reproduce

Oxidation tests took place under ambient air in a 60 mm diameter silica tube heated by a 2 zones resistive oven. Sample tows were placed on a dedicated alumina part and positioned in the hot isothermal zone. Moisture in the environment was recorded over the testing period and ranged between 0.35 and 1.35 KPa with an average of 0.70 KPa. Samples were regularly taken off to extract a tow and inserted back in the oven. This operation was taking less than an hour, negligible in front of considered durations (several days or months). Prior to SEM (S4500 from Hitachi) analysis, each tow probe was cut and glued on 45 ° aluminum stub with carbon tape. The oxide scale thickness was measured on 5 fibers randomly selected among the hundreds. Of note, the coefficient of variation for these measurements lies below 10%.
