Description

We provide two Zn K-edge XAFS spectra of kaolinite (KGa-1b; 8 ppm Zn) and montmorillonite (SAz-1; 60 ppm Zn) from the Source Clays Repository. The first column of the data is photon energy (eV) and the second column is fluorescence μ(E).

Steps to reproduce

The clays were obtained from the Source Clays Repository without further processing. Powdered samples were pressed into 13 mm pellets using a hydraulic pellet press. No dilution was performed due to low Zn concentrations in the two minerals. The XAFS spectra were collected on the 8-ID beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II). A Si(111) monochromator was used, and data was collected in total fluorescence mode using a PIPS detector at room temperature. 40 and 20 scans were acquired and averaged for kaolinite and montmorillonite, respectively. Zn foil spectra were simultaneously collected, and X-ray energy was calibrated by setting the first inflection point of the Zn foil spectra to 9659.0 eV.
