Use of doxycycline as adjuvant periodontal treatment in patients with periodontitis.
Description
A controlled experimental study was conducted to analyse the effects of applying doxycycline as an adjuvant in periodontal scaling-smoothing treatment for patients with periodontitis. Fifty patients were assessed and divided into two groups of 25 each: group A received a hygienic phase and scaling-smoothing, and group B received a hygienic phase, scaling-smoothing, and the application of a mixture of doxycycline 100mg dissolved in saline solution at the subgingival level for 3 minutes. The results showed that Group A displayed a reduction in probing depth. Before scaling and smoothing, the mean was 3.73mm. After 21 days, the mean decreased to 2.46mm. Gum colour prior to scaling and planing was coral pink, with 28% in both females and males. Post scaling and planing, coral pink remained predominant, with 28% in females and 20% in males. The consistency of the gums after scaling and planing was mainly firm and flexible, with 48% of females and 44% of males having this texture, whereas 2 patients had a soft consistency. The texture of the gums before scaling and planing was mainly non-punctate, with 44% in females and 36% in males. After scaling and planing, the texture of the gums was mainly stippled, with 44% of females and 44% of males having this texture. It was concluded that the application of a mixture of doxycycline 100mg with saline was the most effective.
