Description

Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in Malaysia Water’s covered around 5.35 percent in both Peninsular and Borneo mainly in form of marine park and no fishing zone. MPAs are important to the conservation of marine resources by providing sustainable habitats. By 2030, a national target to expand to 10 percent of MPAs was set up in line with the country’s commitment through international obligations at the United Nations level. This article aims to present data on fishermen’s perception on MPAs, as well as demography and fishermen profile. The stratified random sampling technique was used to choose fishermen from eight states of West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The dataset was obtained by a self-structured questionnaire involved 800 fishermen along the coast via face-to-face interview. Data was analyzed using descriptive analysis through frequencies and percentages. The findings presented in tables and figures provides extensive information and feedback on the MPA as well as the socio-economic status of fishermen. The data will assist the the government, policymakers and researchers to strengthen the enforcement of marine protected areas to achieve global targets.
