Description

This is the data for paper:Official Tenure and Haze Pollution-- Empirical Test Based on Panel Data of 279 Cities in China. Abstract: Haze pollution is one of the urgent problems that need to be solved in the stage of high-quality development in China. As a kind of public goods, haze pollution is governed by local government, and the tenure of main leaders of local government determines the continuity of governance behavior. Existing literature often ignores the role of official tenure in the process of haze pollution governance. This paper selects the panel data of 279 prefecture cities in China and tests the relationship between official tenure and haze pollution empirically. This study found that : (1) Official tenure has a significant U-shaped impact on local haze pollution, and the turning point roughly occurred in 3.4 years. The influence of official's age on haze pollution rises first and then decreases with the increase of official tenure, while the influence of official's education level on haze pollution increases linearly with the increase of official tenure; (2) Fixed asset investment plays a significant mediation role in the process of official tenure affecting haze pollution; (3) Further analysis shows that there is a significant positive spatial correlation between inter-regional haze pollution, and the tenure of local official is more likely to have a significant inverted U-shaped impact on haze pollution in neighboring areas. Key words: Official Tenure; Official Characteristics; Haze Pollution; Promotion Incentive; Spatial Correlation HIGHLIGHTS The relationship between official tenure and haze pollution is explored. The role of official characteristics in the influence of official tenure on haze pollution was discussed. Fixed assets investment plays a mediating role in the relationship between official tenure and haze pollution. We further discussed the impact of official tenure on haze pollution from a spatial perspective.
