Plant tissue was dehydrated for observation. Samples were oven dried for 7 days at 60°C. A 15 mm diameter punch was cut out from the leaves using fabricated punching tool. The samples were placed on a sample holder, in carbon conductive tape. Samples were fixed using compressed dry air to prevent unfixed small particles from flying during the vacuum and potentially damaging the equipment. Images were taken using an accelerating voltage of 10 and 15kV with Phenom™ ProX Desktop SEM, Thermofisher. EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction) detection was performed to analyze element composition.
