Godeano-Barr et al. DCI dataset
Description
We examined the effects of a mindfulness-informed conflict transformation intervention (“Mind the Conflict” – MtC) on the approach of teachers and students towards engaging with classroom discussions on controversial issues (DCIs), and on students’ experience in such discussions. Specifically, we examined 3 constructs: Mindfulness in Conflict (manipulation check, only teachers); Motivation to engage in DCIs (including willingness, self-capacity, attribution of importance for dealing with controversial issues and sense of legitimacy (the latter – only for teachers); and Conduct/Behaviour of teachers and students during such discussions. Teachers and students from four schools were randomized into an experimental and active control conditions and completed pre- and post-intervention self-report questionnaires. Interventions included teachers’ training and engagement in two classroom DCIs. After each discussion, students completed a short questionnaire about their experience during the DCI.

The research employed a pretest-posttest design with experimental (MtC condition) and active control ("treatment-as-usual" condition) groups. In the MtC condition teachers received a 25-hour mindfulness-informed conflict transformation training. In the control condition teachers received a 2.5-hour session based on the standard protocol of the Israeli Ministry of Education for teachers on how to hold DCIs in the classroom (for description of both interventions see the supplementary materials). Each school pre-selected 10 classes to participate in the study. Each class was paired with a teacher who participated in the MtC or control training and who committed to holding three DCIs with the students following the training. Pre-test (T1) self-report computerized questionnaires were administered to all participants (teachers and students) before the commencement of the MtC or control trainings. In the four school weeks following the training teachers conducted up to three DCIs with their assigned classroom. Teachers were instructed to decide on controversial issues of their choice, to dedicate a full school lesson (45 min.) to each discussion, and to follow the protocol for DCI provided in the training they received. After each discussion, students completed a short questionnaire about their experience during the DCI (checking the trigger level, level of participation, quality of participation, general atmosphere and students' behaviour during DCIs). Shortly after the last discussion in each school, post-test (T2) questionnaires were administered to all participants in the school.
