Description

This dataset supports the investigation into the germination dynamics and phenotypic plasticity of Cochlospermum regium (Mart. ex Schrank) Pilg. (Bixaceae) for resilient urban landscaping (Urban Meadows) . It includes raw data from a 19-week germination assay (N=100) conducted without scarification and an 8-month experimental monitoring (April–November 2024) of adult specimens established at the "Campina Experimental do Cerrado" (UNESP, Bauru, Brazil) . The records quantify vegetative growth, canopy area dynamics (deciduousness), reproductive phenology (anthesis triggers), and seed productivity per fruit under two contrasting water regimes: Irrigated (AI) and Rainfed (AE) . Photographic evidence (C_r01 to C_r06) documents the experimental context and floral morphology [user prompt].

Steps to reproduce

Steps to reproduce 1. Seed Collection and Processing: Collect mature fruits of C. regium during the start of the dehiscent phase (September–October 2024). Manually remove the pilose fibers (pluma) and the papery endocarp layers to isolate the seeds. Store the seeds in thermoplastic packaging under room temperature until sowing. 2. Germination Protocol (Experiment 1): Sow 100 seeds in individual plastic tubes (28.8 mL) filled with commercial substrate (Carolina Soil®). Do not apply any chemical or physical scarification treatments to assess natural viability. Maintain the units in a greenhouse with 50% shading and automatic sprinkler irrigation (three 15-minute cycles daily). Monitor emergence daily during the first month and weekly thereafter for 19 weeks. 3. Adult Plant Monitoring (Experiment 2): Establish 10 individuals in field plots with natural soil. Implement two distinct management regimes (n=5 each): Irrigated Area (AI): Provide 5 minutes of daily manual irrigation and maintain the plot under partial shade (morning shade from adjacent walls). Rainfed Area (AE): Maintain the plot under full solar exposure and zero supplementary irrigation (rainfed regime). 4. Data Collection and Measurement: Perform monthly morphometric measurements from April to November 2024. Height: Measure vertical height (cm) from the base to the highest apical bud. Canopy Area: Measure the maximum diameter between the leaf tips of the two largest opposite leaves to estimate the radius (r). Calculate the projection area using the formula AC=πr². Phenology: Record the exact day of occurrence for anthesis, total leaf abscission, and fruit dehiscence. 5. Data Processing: Organize the raw measurements into a "wide format" spreadsheet (.csv). Process the data using PAST 0.45 for non-parametric comparisons (Mann-Whitney U) and JASP 0.95.2 for Repeated Measures ANOVA (RM-ANOVA) to validate the effects of time and treatment.
