Description

The dataset contains the litter assessment results conducted in California, USA, from August 2021 to December 2022, mainly in the greater Sacramento area. It contains 273 records. The data was collected through Survey 123 by trained volunteers including students and community members. Litter assessment produces results of “litter index” with scores of 1, 2, 3, and 4. Specifically, “1” is “Clean or a few small items”; “2” is “Small amount of litter”; “3” is “Litter is easily seen throughout the plot”; “4” is “Litter is found to be in excessive quantities”. It is based on the on-land visual trash assessment (OVTA) method, available at https://eoainc.com/ovta/. The dataset contains 14 materials groups: bulky items, electronics, glass, hazardous, medical, metal, mixed materials, organics, paper, plastic, textiles, tobacco, vehicle, and other items. Each materials group has multiple types of trash items. For example, the plastic materials group includes items such as plastic cups, plastic bags, and plastic packaging film. In total, there are 62 types of trash items. More information can be found at https://www.owp.csus.edu/trade/.
