Description

This study aimed to compare the effects of commercial N rates (240 Kg/ha) and the non-application (0 Kg/ha) of N fertilisers on the yield and quality, of four potato cultivars -two commercial varieties (Nadine and Taurus) and two traditional Maori varieties (taewa) (Moemoe and Tutaekuri)- grown in the Manawatu region, New Zealand. The experiment was carried out using a plot design with randomised complete blocks with two replications; N fertiliser rates were applied to the plots, and potato and taewa cultivars were assigned to the rows (sub-plots). Marketable yield, aboveground dry biomass accumulation and tubers N assimilation of Nadine and Moemoe, and tuber dry matter content of Taurus were significantly increased by the N rate of 240 Kg/ha. No significant differences were observed between treatments for nitrogen harvest index (NHI) and nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE) index in any of the potato and taewa varieties evaluated. Harvest index (HI) and nitrogen uptake efficiency (NUpE) significantly increased with a N rate of 240 Kg/ha in Nadine variety, but remained the same in the other three potato varieties. The nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) index exhibited a significant decrease with the application of 240 Kg N/ha in all the evaluated varieties. The data contains Excel files that are the result of direct measurements, laboratory tests and calculations..
