Effect of iPad in Histopathology spotter identification – A comparative study

A sample size of 400 second year undergraduate dental students was selected by random sampling method of sample selection and grouped into two. Group 1: This group includes 200 students who are exposed to conventional histopathology training. Twenty Hematoxyllin and Eosin stained histopathology sections were focused. A drawing of that was drawn on the blackboard. The student drew the same with Hematoxyllin and eosin pencil in their record notebook and was checked by the teacher. Group 2: This group includes 200 students who are exposed to iPad based histopathology training method. The same twenty Hematoxyllin and eosin stained histopathology sections were focused on the microscope. The students were allowed to take photographs of that in iPad. The photos were edited by using “Brushes Redux” application. The salient points were discussed with the students and parts were marked by using the photo editor app in iOS. The edited photos were checked by the facilitator. The edited photos were compiled for future revision. Finally, both the groups were undergone a spotter test for twenty marks. The marks scored were collected, tabulated. This tabulation is shown in this dataset. This marks were statistically analysed by using Independent t test. The mean value for conventional method is 12.925 and for iPad based teaching is 17.875. Thus the results of the study reveal that there is a significant increase in the performance of the students in iPad based teaching of histopathology with a p-value less than 0.0001.
